I recognized in this situation something narrative-rich, larger than me, appropriate for creative writing. But once I started trying to turn it into “short fiction,” I felt rude, even traitorous.

The image of Batuman typing away at her desk, fictionalizing her own journal entries is even stronger here. It's an enumeration of people she meets, who are more interesting, and things she reads... countless references and parallels that hide the lack of plot or ideas. It might be the point, but I am growing frustrated...
