this book is interesting, valuable, but also relentlessly dense. we get great musings on the treatment of the Empress vs Queen Consort as active women, speculation on motivation, etc—but we also get extensive, drawn out recountings of exact battle tactics used or precise lists of nobles present at a certain event. I’m too far in not to finish it, and I do want to get to the reflections on Henry II, but… damn.
