This book has an alternating chapters structure. Every few chapters, the narration will switch from Carter to Sadie, or Sadie to Carter. Each character will narrate up to 3 chapters in a row, and 30 chapters total, give or take few chapters.

Carter is a 16 year-old Egyptian boy. He is the blood of the pharaohs, meaning his ancestors were pharaohs of ancient Egypt. He is the host of the god Horus. Being a host means that a small part of the god's spirit is inside you. If the full spirit was inside you, you'd burn up and die. You could also burn up and die if you aren't strong enough to host a god. He wears light linen so his magic doesn't get interrupted
