The first two sections of tales are leavened with droll humor -- or at leas irony in the case of "The German Student."

Section three offers the sublime vistas of the Abruzzi in Italy. It also depicts the romance and gory life of bandits, outlaws surviving on ransom payments. Irving pulls no punches about their raping of captives.

What a spectacular, thrilling, and delightful book. Great stories connected the way Escher connected stairsteps! Dizzying pioneer use of frame-within-frame-within-frame.
