‘China could have recovered Hong Kong much earlier if it wanted to - in 1949 when people’s revolution army troops stopped at the Hong Kong border…’ - it’s so irritating when historians are disingenuous like this - Chinese guards took over the border posts, that’s a small number of basically glorified policemen - that’s not an invading army pausing.

Tiananmen Square "sent the whole colony into mourning." People watched on TV, shocked, disgusted, and horrified. Almost one million people-many of them dressed in the traditional Chinese mourning colors of black and white, marched in the streets to support the fallen demonstrators. The cenotaph was covered with flowers and black flags. Many people donated blood.’ Must have been horrific watching across the border.
