i’ve only read a chapter and i’m already crying. jesmyn ward’s writing is some of the best i’ve ever read.
the first line of the book: “the first weapon i held was my mother’s hand.”
referring to her mom: “I put my hand on her neck, feel the rush of blood there, the red river that binds her to me. I feel as I only can with her.”
