Nearing the end of the book, as the castle is under seige by the Germans. The artwork is threatened, and the Duke is willing to do anything to save the castle.

There are plenty of absurdities and barbarity.

As a story, this is not a very well written book, but the subject matter is rich with possibilities. I suppose that is the point, that even in a microcosim of war, there still exists all of the usual human impulses.
