I have a question. How do you feel about another reviewer using images you've created in their review without asking? Personally, it bothers me. Taking (anything) without asking is plain rude.

Coeurnoble Not cool :/

Christie«SHBBblogger» Wrong on every level. And there's no end to it. Why must people gain success through other's hard work?

Lana ❇✾DG Romance❇✾ Not gonna fly. I only use stock now that I pay for, making it legally mine. So if someone takes a teaser of mine without asking, that's not OK with me and I will ask them to take it down. ESPECIALLY if they're not just a reviewer but a blogger as well. They should know better.

And ignorance is not bliss in this respect. If you find an image on google, it's not a free for all. If you didn't purchase it or make it, it's not yours. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence these days :-/

Olga therebelreader Sorry :/ should always give credits for others' work teasers, edits etc

Bri I admit to using gifs from google. But never collages or teasers that someone else made specifically for a book! My friend had a problem with this not long ago, she knew a girl who was stealing other bloggers teasers and adding them as her own - that's so wrong!

message 6: by Eliza (new)

Eliza It blows my mind that people can feign ignorance when graphics/edits are obviously watermarked.

You're right, Olga. Credit where it's due, in all things.x

✦❋Arianna✦❋ Sorry it happened to you, Eliza! It happened to me too a while ago...wrong on every level!

I have at it with gifs, lol! I feel for your friend. It's happened to me once (that I know of) and that was annoying enough.x

J.D. Carabella I don't know - most of these things seem to be cuts from movies. So someone else took that photo or made that film that folks are getting their images from. Are they getting permission to use those? Are they bring used in satire or are people infringing on copyright? Do memes that get reshared give credit to whoever added the witty one liner? As Lkay noted, did the reviewer buy a license to use the picture? Ethically, I'm sure it's not cool. Legally, lots of these review gifs are probably illegal to start with.

Eliza Of course, I wouldn't even know where to start with review gifs and policies re: usage. I was speaking more on actually graphics created by an individual and used by another without permission. I guess it's the same with with gifs. A disclaimer perhaps at the end of a review? Although, no one would be under the illusion that you (the reviewer) had made the gif yourself and claimed credit for it.

Beverly I have had this happen to me multiple times. I buy stock images to make my teasers, so like Lana, I own them. Stealing them is not okay!!!!

I have also had my reviews copied, again not okay!!!

J.D. Carabella Ok, color me ignorant. The gifs and pics are cute. But sometimes it's hard to find the review in there. Why do folks do that? Plus, you pay out of pocket for the stock photos? That's even more amazing. Is it all a labor of love or do some folks do it to get traffic to their blog/webpage?
Stealing anyone's intellectual property is not cool.

I think most reviewers do it to liven up their review and make it more attractive. Sometimes the gifs/pictures can also help get your point across or to show your feelings in a different way (at least for me)

Also while we're on the subject, I've been looking for a free stock image site that's good and wondered if anyone had and rec's for a good one? I've seen them mentioned but not sure what's better. I want to try making more teasers and pics

Christie«SHBBblogger» Sabrina, try this one:
https://pixabay.com/

I use it sometimes, and I know Lana does too. It's not a massive selection, but its more than most free sites.

Reviewers started adding images to their reviews to express their thoughts. Then people started adding gifs. Then came images with our favorite quotes.

It was brought to my attention through the blogging community that using an image downloaded from Google, or another source, is stealing. Some bloggers have been sued for this. There is a recent article where a blogger was sued and had to pay $7,500 because they illegally used a picture of a pepper.

So if you want to continue to use images or makes teasers you have to purchase them. I can't speak for every blogger or reviewer, but I do it to express my love for the book. Plus, I love looking at them. Despite us all being readers there is still huge part of people who are drawn to the image first.
