[that] Black Forest philosopher Heidegger has kitschified philosophy... after whom the generations have been chasing, showering him with revolting and stupid doctoral theses even in his lifetime—I always visualize him sitting on his wooden bench outside his Black Forest house, alongside his wife who, with her perverse knitting enthusiasm, ceaselessly knits winter socks for him...

Haha, your flight seatmate sounds very Bernhardian, Fionnuala. There are loads of more anti-Heidegger rants ("that petit bourgeois of German philosophy ... with his crocheted black Black Forest cap on his head” for a starter :-)) that would make this a perfect novel for him.
Hmm, comedy in the title of a Bernhard novel. I guess this is the opposite. Quite interested to read for myself what he has to say about a region I visited last summer.

He said a lot about several Austrian and German regions, but mostly about Vienna, the city I love and the city Bernhard despised (to out it mildly) in his novels. And yet I love Bernhard, can't help it :-)
