I would not recommend this book for children under 15. I too thought the sister, Maud, was the most interesting character. The pirate's son, Tamo, was a very contradictory character. The folklore of the Malagasy people was interesting and sad. As usual, native people were always at the mercy of the so-called developed countries whose only interest was in what they could loot.
