Focuses on the growth of the human rights agenda over an ideological focus during detente, culminating in Helsinki Accords, 1975.
In the USA, covert operations and presidential overreach tackled by Congress - War Powers Act.
In USDR, force relied on - Czechoslovakia. USSR has nothing other than historical infallibility of communism, so human rights agenda undermines power base.
Great read, really insightful book!

Really interesting! Might have to read it myself. The difference in the cold war in the 1950's as compared to the 1970's is something that I feel is often ignored. It almost feels like there are multiple stages in the Cold War that almost feel like different cold wars. Also would totally recommend 'Inside the Kremlin's Cold War' best cold war history book I've read as it is based on huge new access to Kremlin cold war archive that bring a lot of light to the USSR perspective within the Cold War.
