About 10% into this book Astrid says 'He's a manipulator, not necessarily a bad person' which is already too much complexity for the average booktok mind to comprehend. Also, she starts subtly manipulating Sam (for good) around 50%, speedrunning Cassie from Animorphs' entire personality

im glad i randomly decided to revisit this series this book is so GOOD. middle grade fiction now is so wholesome & sanitised & focused on teaching important lessons. Michael grant understands what 12 year olds want: body horror, murder, dead babies, nuclear fallout, psychopaths and a lord of the flies esque setting
