i think what makes a truly despicable character is realism. like so many romance novels have an ex character who is cartoonishly evil (love interest has a puppy… ex HATES puppies he kicks them!) and it annoys me. but fiona from Roaming is so insufferable because i KNOW a fiona i HATE a fiona. and as for The Idiot… i KNOW ivan i wish EVERY ivan a terrible day
