The mailbox did soldierly by the road, capturing a man and releasing him again and again.

Outside, the whirl became a riot of vegetable odors, boggy, and fluid – the waft of old hay, tamarack, algae, moss, sweet sap and rotted leaves, iron, and copper and worms – a musky yawn that hung in the yard.

And that night, he dreamt of jumbled world, color and sound without substance, and in the dreaming everything fitted together perfectly, mosaic pieces interlocked in a stately, exquisite dance.
