How I didn't realize in my first read-through that Erica is to be an allegory of America will forever evade my understanding

I just realized how much fun this reading month has been and why I wanted to study literature in the first place. Preparing for my lit. exam, however, makes me realize why my love for it fades: Not being able to simply enjoy and speak about impressions, and instead being forced to think in certain ways and then be examined on it really fucking blows.
