"That the Ethics in its literary form is a peculiar piece of writing is quite apparent. But its peculiarity does not consist in the obvious fact that it is divided into propositions and demonstrations instead of chapters and sections. It consists in the fact that the manner in which it makes use of language is rather peculiar. It uses language not as a means of expression but as a system of mnemonic symbols."
