The only real journey would be to travel not towards new landscapes, but with new eyes, to see the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to see the hundred universes that each of them can see.

My heart skipped a beat - finally coming across this passage ❤ 🩹

For memory is not a copy, always present to our eyes, of the various events of our life, but rather a void from which, every now and then, a present resemblance allows us to recover, to resurrect, dead recollections; but there are also thousands of tiny facts which never fell into this well of potential memories and which we shall never be able to check.

Marquise Beautiful quote. :)

Noel It’s so different from the bastardized version on Goodreads isn’t it? :) It makes it seem that all that’s required is an internal change of perspective to see new landscapes, but the real quote essentially says that we’re incapable of that by ourselves.

Indeed, Marquise. It is even better when read in the context of this novel.

Haha, so true, Noel, I felt like my entire life was a lie :) As you say, this bastardized quote is misleading when taken out of context. Proust suggests that some soul-sharing might be involved - seeing the world through the eyes of painters, musicians, and writers. Although I don’t always agree with Proust, I appreciate these mini-essays on art and life, especially amidst the narrator’s account of obsessive jealousy. I’ve seen you have this on hold and skimmed through your review (I'd like to read it in detail once I’m done), I’ve had similar issues with Sodom and Gomorrah. This novel is A lot!

Boas leituras✨
