"I have a deep-seated feeling-a premonition, if you like-that all through my life , no matter what I become or where I go, I am fated to have trouble with England and Englishmen." Something of an understatement there

In the dining room there is a hole in the baseboard, a large one. There is a fellow who puts in an appearance at every meal. He's such an enormous specimen that I'm sure he must be the emperor of the rats of Longwood. I've become accustomed to him and I call him Caligula, because of all emperors Caligula was the one who most resembled a rat."

"This was a matter of principle with him. It's part of his philosophy of life. Always win, no matter what the cost. It's proof of the interest he takes in the girl that she should be taught to follow his principles. I'm sure he had no conception what she meant."

Napoleon is now telling Betsy about his family and Corsica (what a large brood of children). Pauline's stories seem to be stealing the show...

"Betsee, Betsee!" he said. "You were always playing tricks with me. And now you have played the greatest trick of all. You have grown up!"

"You have to make allowances for demigods-especially when they're forced to live on earth. And of course he's getting worse because he's being treated so badly here."

Hannah Is this Boney's statement? If so, then yes, a true understatement!

Misfit It is his statement in the novel. If he made it in real life I don't know, but I intend to hunt down Betsy's memoirs and see if it's there.

To Befriend an Emperor Betsy Balcombe's Memoirs of Napoleon on St Helena by Betsy Balcombe

I had no idea of his last exile, and that this young girl befriended him and wrote about him. Just put in an ILL request *fingers crossed*

Good luck, hope you can find it.

I'm not up on my Boney history. French history in general has never interested me much. I'm sure I'm missing out on some good stuff as a result, but there it is.

Misfit I didn't know much about Napoleon until I read the Marianne books. I'm finding this last exile of his to an island in the middle of nowhere leading to this friendship with a young girl who ends up writing about it all just fascinating. Lots of new factoids.

I've found that Napoleon as a whole - or reading about his whole life/career - is so overwhelming, but breaking it down into chunks/individual life events like this is far more digestible (and entertaining).

Misfit I doubt I could handle an entire bio of him, plus I'd guess most would be rather biased. The format in this book is rather clever, I wasn't expecting him to be reflecting back on his life to Betsy. The bits on his growing up in Corsica and his relationship with his siblings is a favorite so far.

I think my sister read a bio on him, a massive one. Took a while to get through. Don't know if it was biased or not. Any non-fiction is anyway.

Misfit Here's a bit about the book Betsy wrote, http://www.napoleon-series.org/review...
