Finished 白蔵主. Really good story. I feel like this book's stories aren't quite mysteries and are instead closer to contrived historic tragedies, a bit like some of Akutagawa's stuff. The structure of the stories and the prose is where this book really shines so far, but man, does it shine.

柳女 - This one was very fun, probably the most entertaining story in the book yet. Honestly though I do feel like Kyougoku's better at longform storytelling, these stories are TOLD in a fun way but ultimately just feel a bit repetitive in their subject matter and shallow as narratives. I do hope the next books in the series are a step-up, esp considering the stories seem to become more connected.

Read 芝右衛門狸. The truth behind this one was pretty boring BUT the road there was one of the most fun ones yet. My read of this book as being a grisly romanticist historical fiction anthology with a mystery-like flavor to it keeps proving itself correct, it feels like.

Read 舞首. I was a bit skeptical of this one at first, but the narrative unraveled in a twisty, fun way, with the formula being switched up a bit once more. I feel like there's a repeated "twist" between this one and 白蔵主 which is a bit lame, but as long as it doesn't become a series staple I'll be willing to look past it.

Guess what. I can't spend more than ~2 months without reading a Kyougoku book now. Good thing that I own around 30 books of his.
