Kant got off to a great start by distinguishing a priori and a posteriori reason, but I always had a little trouble digesting the rest of his ideas. Schopenhauer apparently did too, and his often scathing, often brilliant "amendment" brings the whole thing home. It's not entirely satisfying that he idealized asceticism on the basis of limitations in the principle of sufficient reason, but the theory has integrity.
