This is hands down one of my favourite old school fantasy books ever. It has elements of horror, 19th century adventure writing, it expands the world beyond a quasi-European setting, and it, best of all, contains a lot of heart. McKiernan is by far one of my favourite authors.

Beautiful, brilliant, expanding the world beyond the realms of its initial Middle Earth like setting, their is an openness to Mithgar that is wonderful. Deserts, different races, colours of skin, cultures...and these are the humans, never mind the fantasy races!

Lovely to see.

There is a chance this will be my favourite read this year...
