Freeman's dialog is as unnatural as ever: a wife, giving evidence in coroner's court, refers to her husband as "deceased" instead of by his name, and the tender moment between her and a friend is rendered in the world's stiffest prose. But there is a bit more humanity in this than in the very early entries in the series.
