“Sarcasm was irony which had lost its soul.”

Such gems bedeck this historical fiction of the life of Dimitri Shostakovich. Written with strains as mournful as the string quartets, it plays three scenes from great composer’s life with texture and lament.

I don’t know enough of the history to know how much of his content is historically precise, but Barnes’s work is simple, elegant, and seems to get to the root of things regarding Shostakovich’s relationship to Stalin’s regime. The account of art clashing against power transcends the details.
