He introduced a damsel in distress and now she's the level headed thinker to steady an impetuous and hot headed man. Invisible labour much?

And we're back to copycat. But Gondor and Rohan are blended into one

Apparently these characters feel few emotions outside of anger. And it's started to depart away from being a plot copycat so that's refreshing.

Thoughts so far: Poor world building decisions. Some of the characters' actions don't make sense. Brooks seems to include a history lesson for the sake of having it but seems to have little relevance on the story. Interesting play on the Chosen One trope. Dialogue feels wooden. Brooks' young American and maybe Christian? background is obvious. Wondering if the half-elven nature will play a role. Tolkien copycat.

I feel like Brooks made the correct decisions while becoming a Tolkien copycat. He copied enough to become a successful writer and changed enough for it to try and stand on its own, but not well enough for it to become universally loved and live rent free in people's minds. History is different but there's no world building other than that. No songs and traditions. Just an inn and an innkeeper's son who knows too much about ancient foreign policy but not enough to really argue with a proper historian.
