Thinking about DNFing this one. Why is it so hard to find a well-written friends-to-lovers story? Why authors can't suddenly write when it comes to couples who actually LIKE each other???? FRIENDS TO LOVERS TROPE BASICALLY WRITES ITSELF GODDAMMIT.

Katherine D. There's such an abundance of certain types of stories nowadays, and I feel like authors who write those categories of stories, especially the contemporary-romance genre, tend to write in a very shallow manner, with dialogue and other details that play off of what they think the majority of people care about or how they behave, such as internet/Tik-Tok slang/culture. The crazy thing is, I always set up my mom with a ton of audiobooks, and authors that she really liked when it came to their works set in the Regency era weren't nearly as good in the contemporary-romance genre. It's really sad that they felt that they had to take a different direction with their writing instead of just doing what they did with the Regency stuff and changing the setting.

An Yuuup, "shallow" is the word I'd use to describe the writing style of this particular book. A shame but what can a reader do when authors don't dive enough to give their characters (and dynamics) a much needed depth.
