Ye olden literature is not so long in tooth. Most texts you have heard of regarded as classics in the ancient world clock in at 25-100 pages.
Hither comes the commentators, to interject between every second verse.
I prefer to have the old text in their fullness, with little numerations leading to what the auther thinks is an important detail in the appendices. Much smoother reading experience.
