Before this, that is before the war, I didn’t look at women. On my way to school or the synagogue I walked close to the wall with my eyes cast to the ground. I knew that women existed, and why, but I didn’t appreciate the fact that they had a body. Breasts. Legs. Hands. And lips. Whose touch sets a men’s heart to beating.
