Brilliant exposition on the "apartness" and "alone-ness" of the warrior. I should say, does this not apply also to Yamato-Takeru of Japanese mythology?

Wonderful explanation of Cuchulainn's ferg and why the king comes up with the bizarre plot for all the woman to show him their breasts which causes him to avert his face. The same motif (as in the exact same story) is present, however, in the Bellerophon story so one wonders what the argument would be there? Bellerophon as ritually pure? He doesn't want to activate his battle ecstasy?

The two paragraphs crowning the end of the first part of the book are beyond beautiful and insightful in describing why it is that "the warrior" was seen with such ambivalence by Indo-European society and exactly why they could - and are - seen as warriors regardless.

I already knew Starkadr from The Stakes of the Warrior but it is a pleasure to revisit the theme here in its original formulation.
