Very academic, very much about themes and trends and history (which is fine), and a lot less about pragmatics of form, etc. So, not really what I was looking for.

Some thought-provoking questions, but his very narrow definition of conflict turned me off, as did his position that "conflict" as a driving engine of narrative necessarily means "violence" as the mechanism of resolution, completely ignoring (or worse, unnecessarily recategorizing as other metaphors) other forms of resolving conflict.
