Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī : “One of the impediments to understanding [the Qurʾan] is to read a particular interpretation and then assume that no further meaning could be added to the Qurʾan beyond what was transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās or Mujāhid and to view everything after them as tafsīr bi’l-raʾy; this is among the greatest veils [to understanding the Qurʾan].”
