i get the feeling that i'm late to a party and everyone is looking at me funny on my way in. everyone knows each other already and things feel established without me. i hoped that "standalone" meant i wouldn't have to go back and read the other series just for this. i'll keep going and hope i feel more welcome the longer i stay, but i might dip out early. nothing against the book; its my bad for not doing my homework
