Dostoevsky is so much better...

my worst fear come true

It's not so much that I dislike this book as I don't find it nearly as interesting or compelling as Dostoevsky's, and most of my thoughts are in contrast to Dostoevsky (criticism). But I acknowledge having a bias from having been steeped in the Dosto side of things, and I think it suffers immensely from comparison with Dosto (in a way that it might not suffer from being compared with bourgeois French novels of the period, for instance). The reading experience has not an existential event for me, but that's not exactly a fair expectation to carry into the reading of a novel

fair enough! i was steeped into the tolstoy side of things first so i feel diametric to the dosto school of thought thus my dosto criticisms are scions of my enjoyment of tolstoy

would happily take recs of Tolstoy criticism!
