Poland during the interwar period was crazy (in a bad way) Polish communists were alright during this time though. They at least understood what the Polish ruling elites were trying to do when stoking up anti-semitism

Hitler kept underestimating the Red Army in spite of all the losses (1.5 million men, 6,500 tanks, 28,000 guns, and 12,000 planes) they dealt to the anti-communist regime. Even when the Red Army pushed beyond the old 1941 (pre-Barbarossa) borders, Hitler kept underestimating his opponents. There's something to be said about the arrogance of fascists towards those they deem subhuman.

Part 1 really set the stage. Lots of information for what was going around europe during the interwar period and how WW1 created new borders and removed old ones. Also set the stage for the favorable conditions in Germany to the Nazi's rise.

Take aways from Ch 3: Romania, Poland, Hungary had their own (proto)fascist movements, crushed by the established order (military brass and aristocracy). The failure of these fascist movements doesn't detract from the advancements of Judeophobia and antisemitism in Eastern Europe in the 1930s. Romania & Hungary were not coerced to ally with Grmny, as their ruling classes already viewed communism as a threat
