It was a quiet book, seemed subdued at first. It didn't pack the same punch as Olive Kitteridge although it did deal with tough issues.
The narrator looks back at the time she spent in hospital and was visited by her estranged mother. Several harrowing episodes are briefly dealt with (they could have a book to themselves, really). I wonder whether the novella isn't a little too slight...
