A dental cavity is a hole in your teeth, caused when the outer layer of your enamel weakens and breaks, and is then penetrated by bacteria produced by plaque. These bacteria make a home in the cavities and cause further damage. A way to prevent this? Our saliva. Simply put, saliva is the unappreciated hero in our mouths. When you allow it to interact with your teeth it will remineralize and strengthen them. Hooray!

Flossing when your mouth is unhealthy can actually be more damaging. It creates open wounds through which germs can enter your bloodstream. Scary!

Incredibly interesting. Phillips submits a new model for the dental care industry in which one would receive regular dental evaluations to determine if you need a cleaning, rather than a 6 month automatic regular cleaning schedule. She also hopes we will soon have the technology to easily test mouth bacteria levels and tooth enamel strength, and that in the future these tests will be frequently employed at checkups.
