The book started so fast and fun, and now I feel bamboozled. The characters are insipid. Our lead is one of those dreadful stars who refuses to be happy and is determined to be self-sacrificing without ever lifting a finger. The love interest is a literal shadow and the protagonist can't see through his intentions. We've determined he's cursed but refuse to do more than acknowledge that. Ah well. We continue in vain.

How did I not initially realize this was Sylvia Mercedes? Her characters are honestly kind of a chore to pursue. There is so much internalized overthinking that minutes, days or months could be passing and they are still agonizing over whether to eat a pastry. The world's she builds are rich with description but bogged down by pacing issues. I am so bored, but determined to finish. Much like the lead in this book.
