When all have different experiences that shape our image of God and relationship with God.
Susie apparently didn’t have a good relationship with her earthly father - described him as staying home from church, cursing at the TV, ignoring her mom, & treating her mom as a housekeeper.
Her mom was the one who took her to church.

The author set the reader up for disappointment because she oversold the humor of this book. Because of the synopsis, I was expecting something way better.

Relatable in some places but still not the best thing I’ve ever read.
This book just has so much potential to be better than it actually turned out.
My bother turns our traumatic childhoods into funnier stories: I was there, experienced the pain, but I still laugh because of the way he tells it. The humor is a way of coping with the pain.
My brother could have helped her right this better.

I think the issue is that she talks about her hurt, eluding to trauma but you don’t actually FEEL the trauma. It’s like a child who has a mild cold lying in the couch dramatically announcing to an imaginary audience that they’re dying.
Whereas, another child may be running a fever, looking like the life has been drained from them but still say “I’m fine”. That child, you can feel their misery.

I thought this book would be more conversation but it’s more autobiographical with occasional conversations. I also thought it would be funnier but it’s only got a little tragic humor here and there.
I want to like it but I find her annoying fairly often.
The emotion of the book is kind of confusing too. Mainly because she writing hurt in a healed tone and it’s watering down the then emotion.

Her relationship with her earthly father was rough, but I’ve know worse. I get his tragic past but he could have done better just like mine should have done better.
Fathers do have the toxic power to damage their children’s image of God so I do feel for her. But based off her description her experience wasn’t that bad. Not like others have had to go through.

I think everyone probably had a Kirsten in their school - The bully that manipulated everyone & made your life miserable.
Kirsten reminded me a lot of the girls who tried to bully me in school.
The trick is, you can’t let them have power over you. Which is why I’m glad Susie finally retaliated.
Susie’s mom or teachers should have intervened if they didn’t want her to retaliate.

It’s interesting to see her perception of God.

If I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed with the cause of her meltdown. So far she’s coming across as a little spoiled and mellow-dramatic.
It’s not what I was expecting. I thought this books would be about someone who’s been through some very difficult but relatable experiences and uses humor to cope and make the best of it.
It’s not off to a good start. I hope it gets better from here.
