Depicting gay sex as a gladiatorial contest was a way for some homosexual men to assure themselves that they could fuck other men without compromising their masculinity, as if violence was the defining characteristic of manhood. I didn’t buy it because I’d had the example of my father, a violent, brutal man, who choked on the fumes of his own rage like someone trapped in a burning building.
