The resolution of a story is when the characters start resolving their conflicts. As shown in A Study in Scarlet, it's when Sherlock and Watson finally get to a conclusion of who did the murder, but then the suspected murderer, Hope, has suddenly died. This shows that the resolution is not always a happy ending with no conflicts left behind, in fact, this book reveals more questions than answering them.

The book starts out with Watson, a doctor, looking around for a place to live after being injured in a battle. After he meets up with a friend who directs him to Shelock Holmes, who is also looking for a place to stay. They both agree and then move into the apartment. Watson is still curious about what Sherlock does, but doesn't question it. He then finds himself, with Sherlock in a middle of a crime investigation.
