The author's purpose for the book is deadly serious. Nevertheless it is a hilarious satire, with genuine laughing out loud on nearly every page. The end of term school Christmas celebrations are unforgettable in their zany, accurate spoofing.

I'm spellbound. It's justifiably bitter and psychologically penetrating. Devastatingly skewers a particular institution, and by extension an entire educational system, which is inappreciative of difference and destructive in its callousness. Can't stop reading. The critics that killed this book in 1949 were COMPLETELY wrong. No surprise there. Far superior to A Separate Peace, so far.
