Thomas and George make it on the train. They meet boys named Charlie and Frederick who also go with them to the tunnels. In the tunnels, they are introduced to the men they will be shadowing after being told some rules of the underground; most importantly, not making any noise while under no man's land. Thomas is to work with Boomer, George with Bagger, Charlie with Bats, and Frederick with Feathers (the bird).
