International Law

International law governs states and other international actors, although it is widely considered to be ‘soft’ law, because it cannot, in most circumstances, be enforced.

Human Rights and Humanitarian Intervention

Human rights are supposedly universal, fundamental, indivisible, and absolute.

Distinctions are nevertheless drawn between civil and political, economic, social and cultural rights and solidarity rights.

Terrorism

Terrorism, broadly, refers to attempts to further political ends by using violence to create a climate of fear, apprehension, and uncertainty.

Effective solutions to terrorism have usually involved encouraging terrorists to abandon violence by drawing them into a process of negotiation and diplomacy.
