Kayla is gifted a journal by her therapist, who encourages her to write whenever he is not available. Kayla likes the idea of the journal, but she can't bring it upon herself to write in it. I think she is avoiding it because she has to talk about her new life in Canada. She has been avoiding the truth of why she is in Edmonton, Canada. The journal acts as a negative reminder to Kayla.

Ellen Pompeo and Julia Roberts are the two actresses that come to mind to be cast for this book. Pompeo would play Kayla, who is constantly being thrown under the bus by her mother and also deals with anxiety and depression. I say Ellen because her character on Grey's Anatomy is very similar. Roberts would play Kayla's Aunt, Jillian. Jillian is the "hero" who saves Kayla from losing herself.

Kayla has been seeing her therapist more as she feels more and more out of place in Edmonton. In Edmonton, she doesn't like that the city lacks some diversity and is upset with how her Aunt Jillian has strayed away from their Trinidad culture. Along with her feeling of exclusivity, she finds herself pining over a young boy named Josh who she fears will not feel the same because she looks different.

In the story, Kayla deals with both depression and anxiety. She has been on medication for both, but when she once tried to take her own life with painkillers she was forced to move to Canada and live with her aunts. Kayla also often experiences panic attacks and extreme exhaustion to the point where she can go days without eating a full meal.

In Edmonton, Kayla is exposed to many different cultures and communities. A community that sticks out most to her is the LGBTQ+ community, which is different in Edmonton than Trinidad. Since the story is in first person, we can see Kayla's thought process as she is more exposed to this community. Although Kayla's aunt is a part of this community, she realizes and sympathizes with why her aunt had moved to Canada.

Kayla still trying to navigate her new city of Edmonton, Canada, she gets frustrated when it takes her longer than she wants. As a child, Kayla was mostly known for being articulate and well-spoken, which was greatly admired by many adults back in Trinidad. In Canada, it is far more cold and Kayla despises it. She doesn't appreciate the new changes and routines she has to get used to, but she's afraid to show that.

Kayla is still adjusting to her new temporary life in Canada after living 14 years in Trinidad. From the book, Kayla is a very attentive person and likes to notice and look for the little things that surround her. Although she is a very attentive person, she tends to lose herself in her thoughts which eventually consume her mind.
