“I’d … really like to kiss you,” I croaked. “And I was wondering if you’d maybe like that too?”
Anson chuckled, the skin beside his eyes creasing with his smile. “You never have to ask, you know. I’m one hundred percent on board with this.”
I nodded too fast. “I know. Maw Maw always said it’s polite to ask.”
“In this case, it’s unnecessary.”

Mid ch10: See this is much better. Now that Bishop is confessing to and confiding in Anson, their relationship is growing. And more than that, Anson is able to understand and help. Maybe I was judging him too harshly.

Mid ch7: “I missed making art.”

That’s right! And it’s the first time it’s brought up in this book. Honestly, now that I’ve been reminded, I’m shocked that Anson hadn’t bought a sketchpad and some charcoal pencils for Bishop. Especially considering Anson really admired Bishop’s art and knew how important it was to him.

They’re also both of them hiding stuff from each other and it’s bound to come to a head soon. Obviously I don’t know for sure but Anson didn’t run into a wall like he said. And Bishop is hiding a lot of the details of his struggles and fears from Anson. Again, it’s understandable but I really do want more communication.

Mid ch5: thank God for Cynthia and the Innocence Project. Things are starting to look up. Also I’m struggling with deciding whether I was too harsh on Anson with my previous status update or not. On the one hand, this isn’t a regular everyday situation and it might be okay not knowing how to handle things. On the other, is it too much to ask for a little more perception and sympathy and understanding?

YonnoMaus I'm not liking Anson much so far in this book. Why? 😩

I know why. He's a little inconsiderate at times. Maybe Bishop is an unreliable narrator in that he's projecting his insecurities when he thinks Anson sighs with disappointment and those looks Bishop thinks Anson gets in his eyes. But “in this case it’s unnecessary” right here can’t be mistaken. It’s exactly what Anson said and he sounds a bit rude tbh. He’s also inconsiderate with how he’s overwhelming Bishop with the mobile phone and how it seems he’s trying to force Bishop to go outdoors. I think the best thing Anson said so far was tell Bishop that therapy is an option. Although I am tired of these kinds of books not having people who care enough to… not force, but really stress the importance and not back down from having the traumatized party in therapy immediately. It’s a shame because I loved how book 1 did not shy away from hard truths and real logic. And this is frustrating to me so far with book 2. Lol guess I have a lot to say.
