Levin’s brother passes away in what is the most beautiful, haunting, and remorseless passage that underscores the brutal inevitability of death and the possibility of renewal. Just gorgeous writing. Look at this: “No sooner had the one mystery of death been accomplished before his eyes, and gone unfathomed, than another arose, equally unfathomed, which called to love and life” (p. 505). I mean, come on 🤯.

701/816 (86% done). Levin and Anna finally meet and meet only once in the entire book.

Sadly, I can see how Tolstoy was getting fed up with this final act as he was writing it.

Dolly goes to visit Anna and notices Anna regularly narrowing her eyes. I am just now realizing how important eyes are in this book. I need to talk to somebody about this.
