The questions that could be posed were seemingly boundless: Could women make powerful rulers? Were they too capricious & voluble to rule? Were they inherently virtuous or prone to vice? Did they even have souls? Characteristically, Loredan & the Incogniti took up both sides of these issues, rarely with any consistency. More importantly, Venice was one of the few places where women were participants in such debates.

Confused on points about her name here. Apparently Orazio (G’s artist father) was Pisa native, but Artemisia was born in Rome. Presumably father operated under Gentileschi. When in Florence she used family name of Lomi, “which would have been recognisable to Tuscans familiar with relatives Baccio and Aurelio Lomi.” But so should they know Gentileschi anyway? Pisa not that far from Florence?
