I visited The Dalles for the first time in my life this weekend, which is the odd name for a grubby town in Oregon, and home to Big Chief Bromden in Ken Kesey's incomparable One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which I really need to re-read in adulthood some day.

How interesting! A name like that makes it seem illustrious rather than grubby :D

Yeah, it's been part of my consciousness for so long I was really looking forward to finally arriving there. Like many riverside settlements, it's long and skinny with a railroad track separating the two halves of the town and exaggerating traffic problems. There's a huge hydroelectric dam dominating the skyline and the town itself seems to consist mostly of concrete factories and suchlike.
Oh how disappointing. I also had a completely different vision of the Dalles too! It's in the gorgeous Columbia Gorge isn't it?
