The group is a jelous master. It demands its brand of participation, and the better integrated with it you become, the less free you feel....The group is a tyrrant, and so is it a friend, it is _both at once._ The two qualities cannot easily be separated, for what gives the group its power over the man is the same cohesion that gives it its warmth. This is the duality that confuses coercion and co-option.
