Utah Beach. 4.5. Indifference, ennui, passion, not-ghosts, insanity. Nicely wrapped up in a taut package.

Wonderful Time. 5. Succinct tale of dealing with the superfluous citizens. Sinister!

Theatre of War. 4.5. Another prescient story - fairly accurate depiction of the social factions and moods of the 2020s, though inevitably not so much on the details. Interesting take on American arrogance, and I am impressed that he predicted Reagan as president 4-5 years ahead of the fact. A grim prophecy - these things never end well for either side.

Intensive Care Unit - 5. Eerily prescient of the 2010+ years, especially in the social detachment. Though with different causes and consequences. Shockingly honest and raw in its conclusion.

Dead Time. 4.5. For most of its length it seems factual, and I began to assume part of JGB’s Shanghai memoirs, but gets mystical towards the end. I was actually more engrossed by the (pseudo?) factual stuff, really compelling.
Index 3. An intriguing little amusement. More interesting than it at first seemed.

The Smile. Could almost be a horror story but the mechanics are so clearly (and intentionally I am sure) on display. Made me feel a bit uncomfortable (a Good Thing). 4.5

60 min Zoom. Marvellously meticulous and engaging. Nice take on an obsessive personality, with entertaining tech/photo details. 4.5

Death of God. A bit predictable and not credible by either modern societal standards or those of the 70s /80s. Credibility isn’t essential but I found this story pedestrian even by JGB standards. 2.
Mental Breakdown. More like it. Twisting and turning and pulling away the rug. 4.5

Air disaster. 5. Surprisingly atmospheric for Ballard, at times feels like it’s heading towards folk horror. But ultimately a grim piece of black humour preceded by a masterful bit of misdirection. Loved this one!
