Excuse me while I highlight the entirety of Ch52. (It's only 6 paragraphs long.)

Top Gun does not suck, Shiloh. Anthony Edwards has some great lines. Also young Val Kilmer.

While I appreciate the acknowledgment that women's dating lives often carry more risk than those of many men (especially when young children are involved), it feels awkward.
As does Shiloh's assertion that she's "as intrigued by KD Lang as she was by Jake Gyllenhaal" when we know she and Cary are endgame.
And no disrespect to KD, but why it always gotta be her? Like she's the only name you know.

Shiloh hated [Cary's] ROTC uniform. She hated what it stood for- like, wars and killing babies, and the obvious Hitler Youth resonance..."
There is no emoji or gif that adequately depicts the way I, a military brat with friends and family who did ROTC, sputtered upon reading this line.

Someone needs to take parentheses away from Rowell. (I say this despite the fact that I use them all the time.) But three consecutive sets each containing a sentence instead of one set containing three sentences reads as awkward and excessive.
It's possible I'm on too high alert. I've adored most of Rowell's books, but that was a decade ago. I'm gonna be sad if my tastes have changed that much.
